Author: Jennifer Herrold

Jennifer Herrold grew up in rural Indiana where her father taught ceramics at the nearby University. He also served as her personal painting professor throughout life. Jennifer attended the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy in Northern Michigan, where she won the President's Award in Painting upon graduating. Jen received a BA from Indiana University and then did a years time toward a Painting MFA at the same institution. She spent years hustling paintings- and showing in generally improper venues. She did notably sell thousands of "Inconspicuous Toupees" with a chin strap– to the esteemed novelty dealer, Archie McPhee- which reflects a common vein of humor throughout her paintings. Jennifer worked and showed in Ann Arbor, MI and then in Brooklyn, NY she was an assistant to sculptor Nancy Bowen. Jennifer then went 'home' to Greencastle, IN and saturated the local college professor market with narrative commissions, and abstract realism. She migrated further south to Bloomington, IN and has had several one person shows at local galleries and continues to paint with more cohesion.

My paintings are an accumulation of short occurrences beyond a decorative surface. They capture when a bird or airplane were in the sky or when a curler fell at the salon- caught in midair. If these objects were animated, the birds would fly by, the plane would continue on to its destination, the curler would fall, but the rest of the painting would remain relatively still. People, animals and objects appear by some dictation of timing. As a visual artist, I dictate the migration of the birds, the flight pattern of the airplane, the time of day.
